Griffith Observatory has stood on the south slope of Mount Hollywood since 1935. The City of Los Angeles owns and runs it, and admission to the building and its telescopes has been free since opening day, as Griffith J. Griffith asked when he left the money to build it. On clear nights visitors line up for a look through the Zeiss telescope.
